When we say cryoablation, “cryo-“ means freezing of the tissue. What we do is we introduce a catheter through the groin and there is a balloon close to the tip of the catheter. We introduce this catheter inside the heart, we inflate the balloon and around the balloon there is liquid nitrogen that freezes the opening of the vein from where these abnormal impulses come and cause atrial fibrillation. This is a relatively simple procedure because when we use heat we had to go point by point by point to create a line of block around the opening of this vein. With this new technology we inflate the balloon and position it against the opening and with one lesion we can just create the block around the opening of the vein.
