Elaine's Story: The Importance of Mammograms

Elaine Cope is a positive, hopeful person who shares her story so other women realize how important it is to get regular mammograms.

At age 47, after a routine title=mammogram;healthinfo=Mammogram, Elaine was diagnosed with title=Stage 2 breast cancer;healthinfo=Breast Cancer: Introduction at Miami Valley Hospital. She dreaded sharing the news with her family. But she called her husband right away.

“He was very nervous,” Elaine remembers. “His father died of cancer, and he thought I was going to die immediately.” Elaine’s son and daughter were shocked but supportive.

A month later, Elaine had a title=mastectomy;healthinfo=Mastectomy. She received title=chemotherapy;healthinfo=Chemotherapy for one year and title=radiation therapy;healthinfo=Radiation Therapy Treatment for six weeks. Nine months later, she underwent reconstructive breast surgery, which was unsuccessful. She chose not to try reconstructive surgery again, opting to continue with a breast prosthesis.

Randy Woods, MD of Wright State Physicians Department of Surgery was Elaine’s surgeon. “He was excellent,” says Elaine. “He is the most caring man I’ve met, next to my dad.” Elaine also speaks highly of the Miami Valley Hospital surgical staff.

“Today I’m doing fine,” says Elaine. “I’m glad I caught the cancer when did.”
