Miami Valley Hospital to Unveil Renovated Maternity Center
Open House Scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 1
DAYTON, Ohio (September 19, 2017) – Miami Valley Hospital will unveil its newly renovated maternity center on Sunday, October 1, with tours, a door prize, and refreshments.
The open house runs from 2 to 4 p.m. During the open house, visitors can speak with clinical staff who deliver at Miami Valley Hospital and tour the renovated Berry Women’s Center.
This portion of the multi-phase project began in early summer and included all new furnishings, lighting, cabinetry in the maternity rooms, and bathrooms. The upgrades bring a more modern, serene look to the space and provide families a more comfortable environment to welcome their baby.
The center offers a comprehensive range of birthing services — from natural birth at Family Beginnings, Ohio’s only accredited natural birth center inside a hospital, to high-risk care in its maternal-fetal medicine center and the Level IIIB Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It also is home to the Fetal to Newborn Care Center. This joint venture between the Level IIIB NICUs at Miami Valley and Dayton Children’s hospitals provides a continuum of care for high-risk moms and babies from fetal diagnosis to delivery, newborn care, and beyond.
The renovations to the Berry Women’s Center also include a space dedicated for use by families with infants staying in the NICU. Fully funded by the Miami Valley Hospital Foundation in partnership with the Ronald McDonald House, it will be named the Ronald McDonald Family Room in Emmett’s Place. There, three sleeping rooms will serve as a respite for the immediate family members of the hospital’s NICU patients, as well as high-risk pregnant mothers and their immediate family members. Thanks to the generosity of the Sorensen family, who provided the lead gift in memory of their son Emmett, the family room gives guests a place to relax near their child in the NICU. McAfee Heating and Air Conditioning also was a major donor.
Patients will also notice a new look upon entering the Berry Women’s Center. The rotunda has undergone a facelift thanks to the installation of a custom-designed lighting art display suspended from the ceiling. The display features 108 lights in the form of tulips, ranging in size from 12 to 30 inches in width. Small lighting clusters throughout the building tie back to the main fixture in the rotunda. Donations through the Miami Valley Hospital Foundation in honor of loved ones covered the display’s cost.
“It has been nearly two decades since the maternity center has been updated,” said Melissa Merritt, MSN, RN, director of clinical operations, Berry Women’s Services. “Trends in décor and amenities have changed.”
While the footprint of the maternity center hasn’t changed, a greater emphasis has been placed on open space. The center now has a less cluttered appearance, thanks in part to placing equipment and items such as monitors, linen hampers and trash cans conveniently and discretely within cabinets and out-of-sight.
During the open house, visitors can register to win a Pack ’n Play, a portable playpen for infants and toddlers. Light refreshments will be served. All activities are free. Registration will be on the Berry Women's Center ground floor, and free parking will be provided in the visitor parking garage on Magnolia Street.
