Premier Health Offers Community-wide Stroke Screenings
DAYTON, OHIO (April 27, 2015) – Each year 795,000 Americans will suffer a stroke. Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked due to a clot or the rupture of a blood vessel. The result can be death or severe disability if treatment is not begun immediately. There are some common risk factors for stroke that can be measured and controlled. During May, Premier Health is offering free stroke risk screenings to residents of the southwest Ohio.
“As a country we have made great strides in screening for stroke risk, prompt stroke care, and research that leads to even more effective stroke treatments,” says Bryan Ludwig, MD, chair of the Premier Health Neuroscience Institute. “As a result of these efforts, stroke recently fell to the fifth leading cause of death in the US. While this is an impressive improvement, stroke is still a leading cause of disability, which is why knowing your risk is important. The overwhelming majority of strokes are preventable, so take a few moments out of your day to help avoid needing the care of our comprehensive stroke team.”
Screenings include total cholesterol, HDL (good cholesterol), blood sugar, blood pressure, listening to the blood vessels in your neck, a stroke risk assessment, and counseling with a stroke nurse for those found at risk. Appointments are required, and no fasting is needed for these screenings.
Your risk of stroke is influenced by your age, race, gender, family history, and personal history. Risk factors for stroke that you can change, treat or control include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, tobacco use, diabetes, carotid or other artery disease, peripheral artery disease, atrial fibrillation and other heart diseases, sickle cell disease, poor diet, physical inactivity, and obesity.
