Premier Health and Miami Valley Hospital Offering New High-Tech Prostate Imaging and Biopsy System

MVH first hospital in Dayton region to offer UroNav Fusion Biopsy System

Dayton, Ohio (Aug.20, 2015) – Premier Health and Miami Valley Hospital are proud to introduce a powerful new imaging solution for the analysis, planning and targeted biopsy of the prostate gland, giving what some are calling a “game changer” in the detection and treatment of prostate cancer.

MVH’s UroNav Fusion Biopsy System, made possible by donor funding to the MVH Foundation, combines powerful 3T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the prostate with ultrasound-guided biopsy images in real time, allowing radiologists to pinpoint specific areas of the prostate for biopsy.

“Until recently, prostate cancer has not been reliably detected on imaging, and

MRI has been performed with the invasive and uncomfortable endorectal coil,” explains radiologist Shane W. Smith, MD. “This new technology is a tremendous development in radiology, one that I believe is a game changer.”

MVH leaders and physicians say UroNav is poised to become the new standard in prostate care. It gives new hope to patients with elevated and/or rising PSA levels, and offers them an alternative to remaining in an uncertain state of diagnosis after a prostate exam. It also holds the potential to reduce the number of tissue samples acquired, thus reducing risk of infection, bleeding, pain and recovery time.

“This allows us to better identify clinically relevant prostate cancers and focus our biopsy more accurately on these suspicious areas located on MRI,” says urologist Mark Monsour, MD. “It will allow patients to have their cancers identified without having to go through multiple sets of biopsies that were previously done with only ultrasound guidance.”

Housed at Miami Valley Hospital South in Centerville, the UroNav system is used in conjunction with MVH’s recently installed 3T MRI, which has a significantly stronger magnet than conventional scanners and offers images of areas inside the body at much greater detail.

About prostate cancer

  • Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in American men and the second-leading cause of cancer death in this population after lung cancer.
  • One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. That’s compared to one out of eight women developing breast cancer.
  • The average age at diagnosis is 66.
  • It is estimated there will be nearly 223,000 new cases diagnosed and more than 27,500 deaths from prostate cancer in 2015.
  • Finding cancer early means treatment begins earlier – contact your physician to schedule your annual prostate examination
