Marigold House Offers Home Atmosphere with Benefits
Polly Share loved the quiet life offered in a coach home at the SpringMeade Retirement Community in Tipp City, where she has been a resident for more than 20 years. As time passed, she realized that she needed help with her meals and housekeeping chores.
She found the answer recently in the Marigold House, a new residential care facility in her own backyard. Marigold House is a duplex that has been transformed into a five- suite home. It has a full- service kitchen, kitchenette, and four common areas including an enclosed solarium and patio.
SpringMeade’s latest offering, the Marigold House will be home to up to five people who need assistance with the activities of daily living, meal preparation or medication assistance.
Share and her husband, John, were among the first residents of the SpringMeade coach homes when the community – now encompassing 85-homes - was under construction from 1992 to 1997. “We came over every night when we thought everyone would be gone,” she recalled of the couple’s journeys from New Carlisle to watch the home being built.
Following John’s passing, Polly, 97, remained in their home until she chose a suite at the Marigold House.
“It’s home. It’s so quiet,” she said of SpringMeade. “I need help getting my meals, but I don’t want to leave this area.”
Her daughter, Andrea Reed of the Atlanta area, said living in the Marigold House would be like living in the SpringMeade coach home but with benefits.
“At first I was wondering, but once I saw it, it is just the perfect solution, I think, for Mom’s next step. The girls are exceptional. They are just so caring,” Reed said of the staff.
Kathy Davidson, administrator of independent living, said, “So many people at a certain point do not want to live alone anymore. This is a good alternative. You can have your own space and you have someone close by all the time. Knowing that someone is there is the important thing. They do not want to be alone and at Marigold House, they don’t have to be.”
Davidson described the Marigold House staff, led by manager Sarah Hart, as “awesome.”
“We have been fortunate to put together a great team, who have the skills and heart to aid this very important generation and whose main goal is to enrich their lives.”
Staff members will prepare home-cooked meals and will be nearby if residents need assistance. In addition to Share, other initial residents of Marigold House come from the SpringMeade Health Center. These residents have made enough progress to move into an environment like Marigold House, Davidson said, adding that they are fond of SpringMeade and want to stay on the campus.
“We love the name Marigold House, but the credit for the idea goes to Jordan Winner, of our maintenance staff. The name is ideal since it is located at 35 Marigold Court on the SpringMeade campus,” said Davidson.
