Area Physicians’ Office Celebrates a Century of Outstanding Medicine

Local Doctors Reflect Upon 100 Years of Tradition and Quality Care in the Dayton Community

DAYTON, Ohio (January 20, 2012) – The practice of medicine has seen countless changes over the years, thanks to advancements in education and technology. One local practice has seen and lived through many of them —100 years worth, in fact.

Associated Specialists of Internal Medicine celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Established in Dayton in 1912 by Dr. A.B. Brower, the practice has continued its legacy of providing quality care for everything from colds to chronic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.

“Internal medicine is the basis of all medical specialties—for instance, cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, oncology,” said Dr. Roger Griffin an internist practicing at Associated Specialists of Internal Medicine. “When we train in internal medicine, we spend all of our time learning to prevent and treat medical problems in adults.”

Associated Specialists of Internal Medicine in Dayton has built its practice on caring for patients completely. The practice serves 10,000 to 15,000 patients, 8,000 to 10,000 of whom come in, at a minimum, for regular yearly visits.

In its 100-year existence, Associated Specialists of Internal Medicine has cared for a whole host of individuals in the Dayton community, added Dr. Barry Taylor, an Associated Specialists Internist. It’s a legacy built on Dr. Brower’s example, who acted as the physician for Orville Wright, co-inventor of the airplane, until Wright’s death in 1948.

From its first office building, located in the Fidelity Building in downtown Dayton, to its current location in Centerville, Associated Specialists of Internal Medicine has been home to a number of physicians in the practice’s 100-year existence.

“I would imagine, when the practice was started in 1912, it was just Dr. Brower and his medical bag,” said Dr. Taylor. “Since then, the practice has acquired additional partners over the years, including some sub-specialist partners to help us grow a multi-specialty group.”

The first partner of the practice was Dr. Tom Sharkey, who joined Dr. Brower in 1939. Dr. Robert Craig joined the practice in 1946, followed by Dr. Don Sando and Dr. George Parkin in the 1950s. Many sub-specialists have practiced with the team including, Drs. Michael Craig and James Graham, lung specialists and Dr. Richard Cammerer, who specialized in gastrointestinal issues. Today, six physicians are in practice at the office along with more than a dozen additional employees. The physician team includes Dr. Griffin, Dr. Taylor, Dr. John R. Boyle, Dr. Louis Heckman, Dr. Frank von Maluski and Dr. Chethana Raghupathy.

While tradition is built into the practice at Associated Specialists of Internal Medicine, the practice has evolved with the times. One thing that hasn’t changed is its commitment to thorough and quality care, explained Dr. Griffin. “We feel it’s important to provide hands-on care to our patients that, I’m certain, was a best practice 100 years ago and will continue to be for the next 100 years.”
