What types of arthritis can occur in the shoulder?

Arthritis affects the joints, muscles, and bones, according to the Arthritis FoundationOff Site Icon (AF). Many forms of the condition can cause limited mobility, pain, swelling, and stiffness, the AF states.

Three form of arthritis can affect the shoulder, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic SurgeonsOff Site Icon (AAOS). The AAOS states that arthritis conditions that affect the shoulder include:

  • Osteoarthritis – the most common form, it’s a degenerative form, wearing away the cartilage and causing bones to grind together
  • Posttraumatic arthritis – develops after an injury such as dislocation of the shoulder
  • Rheumatoid arthritis – affects the lining of the joints, causing them to swell and resulting in pain
