What steps can older adults take to make sure they get the sleep they need?

As we age, there are steps we can take to help get better sleep, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesOff Site Icon.

Some steps to help you sleep include:

  • Avoid caffeine and other stimulants close to bedtime
  • Avoid tobacco products, especially before bedtime
  • Do not take daytime naps
  • Exercise in the morning or afternoon instead of evening or night
  • Go to bed at the same time every night
  • Have a light bedtime snack
  • Talk to your doctor about any of your medications that might affect your sleep
  • Use your bed only for sleep
