If you have the flu, your doctor can prescribe antiviral medicines to fight it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Antiviral medicines can lessen the symptoms of the flu and shorten the time you have the flu by a day or two. They can also help prevent the flu from turning into a more serious sickness, according to the CDC.

Even if you don’t take antiviral medicines to help fight the flu, you still need to take care of yourself by:

  • Getting a lot of rest and sleep
  • Drinking plenty of water and other clear fluids to avoid dehydration
  • Taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen to treat achiness and treat cough and fever

If you are experiencing flu symptoms, ask your doctor which treatment options are best for you.
