What is electrophysiology?

Premier Health’s Dr. Kevin Kravitz defines electrophysiology. Click play to watch the video or read the transcript.

Taking apart the word electrophysiology tells you what it is. Electro- is a prefix that means “electric” or “electricity.” Physiology is the study of the functions or activities of a living organism or any of the organism’s parts. Thus, electrophysiology (EP) is the study of electricity in the body. Cardiac electrophysiology deals specifically with electrical impulses in the heart.

As Dr. Kravitz explains, general cardiologists focus on the mechanics of heart function—how the heart muscle moves blood through the vessels. Electrophysiologists, on the other hand, focus on the electrical system of the heart that determines the heart’s rhythm. These specialists diagnose and treat irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), often by using highly advanced technological procedures.
