What causes essential tremor?

Essential tremor is a neurological disorder which involves rhythmic shaking, most commonly in the hands, but it also could affect a patient’s head as well as their voice.

We believe that essential tremor is caused by some disruption in the basal ganglia of the brain. It is some sort of neurochemical disturbance, but we don't know exactly what causes essential tremor. We know that's an autosomal dominant disease. That basically means that it’s the flip of a coin that you would get it if one of your relatives had essential tremor, but we're not sure exactly what the cause is.
