What are the different types of stroke?

There are two main types of stroke. An ischemic stroke is when parts of the brain lose their oxygen and blood supply because of a clot. This produces a stroke. The other type of stroke is called a hemorrhage, which refers to bleeding in the brain.

There are different types of ischemic stroke. An embolic stroke involves a clot coming from the heart or another artery to the brain. A thrombotic stroke is when there is plaque and clot formation within the arteries of the brain.

There also are different types of hemorrhagic strokes. An intracerebral hemorrhage is when there is blood in the actual brain tissue. A subarachnoid hemorrhage is typically caused by trauma or a cerebral aneurysm.
