Osteoarthritis is the most common form of the disease, leading to a gradual deterioration of joint tissue, according to the Arthritis FoundationOff Site Icon (AF). Left untreated, osteoarthritis will most likely worsen, according to the AF.

Surgery may become necessary based on the progression of the illness, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic SurgeonsOff Site Icon (AAOS). If arthritis begins to affect mobility and disrupt one’s day-to-day tasks, surgery may be an option, the AAOS states.
