Is there a screening for preeclampsia?

There is actually a very good screen for the condition that can be done early in pregnancy. It includes an ultrasound evaluation of the maternal arteries and certain chemical markers that are measured in the maternal blood.

An effective screening test is now available to determine if an expectant mother is at risk of developing preeclampsia during her pregnancy. The screening involves:

  • An ultrasound evaluation of blood flow in the mother’s arteries that supply her uterus
  • A blood test to detect chemical markers that indicate that the mother is at increased risk of developing preeclampsia
