Is multiple gestation pregnancy occurring more often?

Multiple gestation pregnancy has risen dramatically in the last 20 years, according to the American Society for Reproductive MedicineOff Site Icon (ASRM). The rate of twin births has increased more than 50 percent since 1980, and the occurrence of triplet and quadruplet births has climbed even higher, according to the ASRM.

The increased use of fertility treatments is a factor in the increase of multiple gestation pregnancies, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s HealthOff   Site Icon (HHS). Another factor is that more women are waiting until they’re older to have children – older women are more likely than younger women to have a multiple birth, according to HHS.
