How does sleep change as we age?

As we age, our sleep patterns start to change, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesOff Site Icon (HHS).

Many older adults feel like getting older makes it harder to fall asleep. We might also wake up more often during the night and get up earlier in the morning.

As we age, we spend less time in deep, dreamless sleep.

The need to urinate, anxiety, and pain or discomfort from chronic illnesses also can all lead to waking up more often during the night as we age.
