If your glucose – blood sugar – levels are not within the healthy range you and your doctor have discussed, you can get your levels back on track.

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the quickest way to raise low blood glucose – hypoglycemia – is by eating sugar or simple carbohydrates. Choose foods with at least 15 to 20 grams of sugars or carbohydrates, such as:

  • A ½ cup of juice or regular soda
  • 2 tablespoons of raisins
  • 5 saltine crackers
  • 4 teaspoons of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

When your blood glucose levels are too high – called hyperglycemia – eating healthier and exercising may help lower them.

Changing your eating habits and talking with your doctor or nutritionist about the best foods for you can help lower high blood glucose levels.

Exercise can also help lower blood glucose levels. But if your level is above 240 mg/dl, exercise might make the levels go even higher.

If you can’t lower blood glucose levels enough on your own, you will likely need to take insulin injections to help keep your blood glucose at manageable, safe levels, according to the ADA.
