Breast Ultrasound

Premier Health offers breast ultrasound services to follow up on a known breast issue. Breast ultrasound is used to distinguish between solid tumors and fluid-filled cysts. Ultrasound is also used to evaluate lumps that are hard to see on a mammogram.

Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound

Both the Samaritan Breast Center at Good Samaritan North Health Center and Upper Valley Medical Center now offer Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound (AWBUS), a supplementary ultrasound examination of both breasts for women with an inconclusive mammogram. An inconclusive mammogram includes women with dense-breast tissueOff Site Icon and/or breast implants. For these women, mammography is not a perfect examination. However, the AWBUS examination is not a replacement for screening mammography.

Studies show that more cancers are found in women with dense-breast tissue when an ultrasound examination is added to the screening mammogram. AWBUS can increase confidence in your diagnosis. This is because:

  • Early detection can increase breast cancer survival
  • Finding cancers when they are small can save lives
  • When breast cancers are found when they are small, they can be easier to treat
  • Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound, in addition to mammography, has found more cancers in women with dense breasts than has been found by mammography alone
  • In dense-breast tissue, mammography detects areas of concern (such as calcifications) that cannot be seen well by ultrasound. Ultrasound detects cancers (such as fast growing invasive cancers) that cannot be seen well by mammography

What is Whole Breast Coverage?

Whole breast coverage means that all of your breast tissue is examined for review by a radiologist. This includes:

  • Lower lymph nodes under your arm
  • Inner breast tissue between your breasts
  • Outer breast tissue under and around your breasts
  • Tissue under the collar bone

What to Expect

AWBUS is an automated whole breast ultrasound examination. Ultrasound uses sound waves and is safe for unborn children and therefore safe for your breast tissue.

  • It is painless
  • No breast compression
  • No radiation
  • No injections
  • Is permanently recorded for your physician’s review and follow-up
  • Interpretation of your study is done by a trained physician
  • A report is sent to your referring provider following the examination

Is AWBUS Covered by Insurance?

AWBUS is cleared by the FDAOff Site Icon as an additional examination in conjunction with mammography. Although there is now an insurance code for “complete breast” ultrasound, some insurance companies may not reimburse the cost of this examination. Check with your insurance plan.

A physician referral is required for this exam. Talk with your physician to find out if you have dense breasts and if AWBUS would be right for you.
