When to Go to the Emergency Department

The emergency department is the best place to get immediate attention for severe or life-threatening conditions such as:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Head injury
  • Pain or weakness in a leg or arm
  • Poisoning
  • Severe laceration
  • Sudden difficulty speaking or trouble understanding speech
  • Sudden severe headache
  • Serious burn

If you think you have an emergency, call 911 right away or go immediately to your nearest emergency department.
