Expansion of Premier Health APRN Practice

By Deborah Matosky M.S., APRN, FNP-C, chairman, Premier APP Committee

It is an exciting time for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses at Premier Health. From Primary Care, to the Acute Care setting, to Home Health venues APRNs are being recruited at an increasing pace. Over the years, this group of professional clinicians has shown excellence in care provision, helped improve access to care for our patients, and embraced a truly collaborative care model with our physician partners.

It is conjectured that the increase in population of aging Baby Boomers, the growth of Medicaid benefits, and the rise in diabetes and obesity has contributed significantly to this expanding population. Health care delivery research has shown that by the year 2020, in the State of Ohio, “there will be an estimated physician shortage of 5,000- physicians” (Toledo Blade, 2016). This shortage of providers are expected to be most apparent in: primary care, rural health settings, and low income-inner city hospitals and clinics, making access to care for these patient groups strained.

Premier Leadership has made a commitment to make Premier Health the preferred employer for Advanced Practice Nurses in Dayton Regional area. There has been expansion of the Human Resource staff to include specialists in APRN & PA recruitment to meet the health care needs of this growing patient population. We are looking forward to meeting the needs of our regional patient populations now, and in the future through the expansion of our clinical provider populations.

What Is an APP?

Have you been hearing the term APP in your clinical practice setting and wondering just what that means? To avoid using the obscure term “Mid-Level,” it has become the System moniker to identify Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) and Physician Assistants (PA) clinical providers. While there are educational, licensure, and certification differences; practice environments and scope are very similar.

In an effort to provide a voice and support to this unique group of professional clinicians, Premier Health leaders created a System Advanced Practice Providers (APP) Leadership group. This APP group is comprised of APRN & PA clinicians from across the network. The members are selected from all four hospitals, Fidelity Home Healthcare, Premier HealthNet, and Premier Health Specialists to provide global representation. The group meets monthly and is currently working on synthesis of APP practice. Areas of focus include: synthesis of a single credentialing policy for the network, issues of Scope of Practice, prescribing, quality reviews, regulatory oversight, legislation, mentoring, and development of a group charter.

Education is also a component of our workflow and we are currently working on Quarterly Dine and Learn experiences which provide an opportunity to meet with colleagues across the network to engage, learn from a topical speaker, and enjoy an al fresco dinner. The cost is free to Premier employees and those credentialed by Premier. 1 hour of CME is awarded for attendance.

The Next Meeting will be held at Miami Valley Hospital on Monday, February 22 in the Maxon Parlor of the Weber Bldg. Gathering will begin at 5:30 pm with lecture and dinner to proceed from 6:00-7:00 pm. The topic for this month is: Scope of Practice given by Debbi Matosky MS, APRN, FNP-BC. E-mail notices are going out soon.

We are using an email database for sharing information. If you are an APRN or PA employed or credentialed by Premier and your are not receiving mailings please forward your professional info to Debbi Matosky or Erin Kelly for inclusion on the list.
