Neonatal Care at Premier Health
Some newborns need more specialized care than the regular nursery can offer. We have Special Care Nurseries and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to deliver the care these babies need to help them get a good start on life.
Help for Newborns at Special Care Nurseries
Our Special Care Nursery staff creates a warm, comfortable environment to help your child overcome challenges and begin to grow and develop normally. The Special Care Nurseries at Premier Health are Level II nurseries, meaning we are equipped to manage complications that regular nurseries cannot.
Conditions we manage include:
- Low birth weight
- Genetic conditions
- Respiratory difficulties
- Drug dependence
Offered through: Miami Valley Hospital South, Good Samaritan Hospital, Atrium Medical Center, Upper Valley Medical Center
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Care for Critically Ill Newborns
The nationally recognized Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Miami Valley Hospital is Dayton's most experienced Level IIIB NICU that provides comprehensive care for critically ill newborns. These babies include those who are born prematurely and full-term newborns with complications.
Our NICU is equipped to handle conditions beyond those the Special Care Nursery can address. Among the common problems treated in the NICU are:
- Respiratory distress
- Feeding problems
A premature infant’s stay in the NICU typically lasts a week to a few months depending on how early the infant was born. You’ll be glad to know that the vast majority of premature babies go on to live normal, healthy lives.
Offered through: Miami Valley Hospital
Innovations in Specialized Care for Newborns
We are continually working to help families by improving the lives of infants in our NICU. Part of this work is research that provides the latest care innovations for our special newborns.
We’ve been involved in developing specialized treatments that include:
- Medicines to help premature infants with poorly developed lungs
- New drugs for infections
- Special testing for hearing problems
Our NICU is also the only facility in Dayton that offers a special heart-lung bypass machine that is used for treating newborns with severe respiratory failure and some heart problems.
